FAQ on Opencast

Note for Apple devices: We are currently working on a solution so that videos can also be accessed via Safari. Until then, please use the latest version of Mozilla Firefox to play videos.

Number of videos and series

15 episodes (individual videos) can be created per series. Five series can be created per course.

Changes to a video

Series imported into other courses are referenced. Changes to a video within a series are therefore also adopted in other courses.

Provision and placement

Each video can be shared once at a desired position in the course.

Download videos

There is no download option in the video player in Moodle, so students cannot (conveniently) download the video. Videos that are shared externally can be downloaded.

Poor internet connection

Opencast has an adaptive video player. This allows the quality of the video to be adjusted package by package depending on the connection quality. This means that videos can be played even with a poor internet connection (the image quality is then reduced).

Difference between presenter video/presentation video

Presenter video: Use the presenter video if you have a video file with the recording of a presenter or a movie. Opencast automatically creates a preview image for the presenter video.

Presentation video: Use the presentation video if you have a video file with the recording of a slide presentation or a screencast. It is important that the focus of the video is more on the presentation and less on the person giving the presentation, who may also be seen in the video.

Use the presenter video option if only one video is uploaded.

Various video formats

If you combine two videos (presenter and presentation video) into one video in Opencast, the output file is automatically converted. It is not a problem if the source videos are in different video formats.
