Fair Allocation

The activity “Fair Allocation” enables selection processes that go beyond the possibilities of simple voting or group voting.

👥 Students can communicate preferences for different options (selection phase). Assignment is automated, but can be manually post-processed. Instructors pre-determine the strategy for the selection process: Likert scale, weighting by assigning points, etc.

This activity is suitable for:

  • Selecting groups or field trip locations.
  • Assigning topics (term paper, presentation).

Instruction

Add the activity “Equitable Distribution” to the Moodle course room.
First, set the mode in which students should select. Then set up the selectable options including caps.
After students select their preferences, the distribution follows (on the date set or started manually). Manually re-edit the distribution if needed.
After the distribution is complete, you can publish the results. You can now also have Moodle groups created.

Add activity and set mode

1. in Edit mode: select “Create material or activity” and add a “Fair distribution”.
2. Configure the “Equitable Distribution” activity.
Depending on the planned setting (from self-test to e-exam), very different settings are possible. The settings for a simple self-test are described below, unless otherwise described the default settings are used.

  • Name (mandatory field)

Enter name, appears on the course page.

  • Description Enter information for students, e.g. explanation of the course. However, the core data will later also be displayed to students in this way. * Voting strategy (mandatory field). * Specify start and end date of voting. * Expected publication date (but you have to trigger it manually). * Depending on the selected strategy, specific settings still follow. ==== Reconciliation strategies ==== * Accept-Reject: Students can vote to accept or reject each choice. * Accept-Neutral-Reject: Students can vote for each choice option to accept, reject, or be neutral about that choice option. * Likert Scale: Students can vote for each choice option on a scale of positive integers. The scale starts with 0. Its end can be set in the preferences. A high number indicates a high preference. * Distribute Points: Students can assign points for each choice. The total number of points to be awarded can be set in the preferences. The more points a choice receives, the higher its preference. * Ordering: Students can indicate and rank their 'N' best choices. How many choices to indicate can be set. * Check Yes: Students can indicate whether each choice is acceptable to them by checking boxes. ====Set up options ==== 1. in the “Fair Distribution” activity, click the “Edit Choices” button.
    2. click the “Add New Option” button: * “
    Title” (mandatory field) * “optional description” and the * “maximum number of participants” (mandatory field) enter.
    3. confirm with “
    Save and continue**”.

Perform steps 1 to 3 for each option.
